“Green and Other Colors,” a solo show featuring works by Joan Bevelaqua, will open during a First Friday reception to be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 1 at Arts on Main in Gloucester.
The event is free and open to the public. A cash bar will serve beer and wine along with hors d’oeuvres. The exhibit will be on display throughout September.
Bevelaqua is a painter who works primarily in watercolor and oil, said a press release. She has held teaching positions, juried art exhibitions, and directed several galleries in addition to holding a number of organizational positions, including as president of the Watermark Gallery in Baltimore and on the board of directors for Foundry Street Studios and Gallery in Savage, Maryland. She has served on the Art Advisory Board at the University of Maryland Global Campus, where she has been teaching since 2000. She also teaches at Howard Community College and Prince George Community College.
After earning a B.A. in art from Anna Maria College in Maine and an M.F.A. in painting from Towson University in Maryland, Bevelaqua studied advanced watercolor with John Stuart Ingle at the University of Minnesota.
Bevelaqua’s art has been widely exhibited, said the release, including at several Washington, D.C., art galleries, Howard County Community College and the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Maryland, and the Art League at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria.
Her honors include first-place awards from several Baltimore Watercolor Society sponsored shows and the Juror’s Choice Award from the Maryland Federation of Art sponsored show, “Art on Paper.” Most recently, she won the Jurors’ Choice Award in the Stokes of Genius Exhibit.
Bevelaqua recently relocated to Williamsburg with her husband, Robert Pagelsen, and their dogs and cats.
Live music for First Friday will be provided by Lori de Los Santos. The evening is sponsored by Rick and Gail Griffin.
