Fireworks Committee seeking donations for Mathews show

The Mathews Fireworks Committee is still seeking donations for the annual Mathews County Fireworks Show, to be held on Wednesday, July 4, at Mathews High School. The rain date is Thursday, July 5.

This year’s goal is $20,000, committee spokesperson Jeannie Elliott said. Mathews businesses and individuals have always been generous, she said, and they can be sure that the money they donate will help put on a top-notch show. In addition to the cost of the fireworks themselves, funds raised pay for such expenses as acquiring permits, paying for a shuttle bus, and sending out mailings.

The fireworks are 100 percent paid for by donations, with no taxpayer funds used, said Elliott, making contributions from community members critical to the event’s success. As with every other year, she said, any remaining money will be left in the reserve account and used next year.
