‘Extreme heat’ causes G.I. bridge to stick open

The Gwynn’s Island Bridge was stuck open Tuesday afternoon “due to extreme heat,” according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT reported that crews were dispatched to “cool down the temperature of the bridge” and that it reopened at 5:54 p.m.

The bridge crosses Milford Haven, linking the mainland of Mathews County to the island. It has a moveable swing span which opens frequently. The bridge was opened in 1939. ...
