An elderly Mathews man died in a structure fire at his home in the Glebe Sunday evening, and the death is being investigated by the Virginia State Bureau of Criminal Investigation/Arson Unit.

On Wednesday afternoon, Virginia State Police identified the victim as 80-year-old Richard Henry Couch.

Mathews County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 200 block of Gayle Lane at 7:13 p.m. according to the weekly fire report from the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire Chief Donnie Lewis said that when units arrived, there was a small amount of smoke showing, and firefighters were quickly able to put out the fire, which was confined to one room.
