Dukes fall to Phantoms, 27-7; face Hampton tonight

After five consecutive Peninsula District wins, the Gloucester High School varsity football team fell to Phoebus, 27-7, in Darling Stadium on Friday.

“There was no offense production,” said Gloucester coach John Scalf. “My boys didn’t show up.” Scalf said his defense was able to shutdown the Phoebus running game but the Phantoms got the win in the air. Phoebus passed for over 150 yards.

Scalf said his team let the Phantoms get away in the first half, where Phoebus scored three touchdowns and two extra points for a 20-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Scalf replaced starting quarterback Isaiah Spencer with quarterback Isaiah Lester, freeing Spencer and his athleticism.

Spencer scored the Dukes’ only points in the third quarter, capping a drive with a short run into the end zone. Phoebus also scored during the third; the fourth quarter was scoreless.
