Gloucester High School closed out the 2013 football season with a 21-12 win at home over Menchville on Friday. The Dukes finished the year with a 2-7 record against Peninsula schools; 2-8 overall.
James Scott scored the first touchdown for the Dukes, rushing a short distance for an early score in the first quarter. The Monarchs got on the board in the first quarter with a field goal. They also tacked on a touchdown of their own with less than a minute remaining in the period.
In the second quarter, Scott delivered a pass to Jake Spector for a 34-yard touchdown reception and Jackson Lowther delivered his second of three successful point-after kicks to make it 14-9. Menchville added three more points to its score just before the half with a 30-yard field goal for a 14-12 half-time score.
In the second half, the Dukes’ defense stood strong and did not allow any more scoring by the Monarchs. Scott threw his second touchdown pass of the night in the third quarter, this one a 7-yard toss to Brady Barefoot for the TD and the 21-12 final score.
Gloucester put up 343 total offensive yards in the win while holding the Monarchs to 199. The Dukes also sustained 14 penalties that cost them 125 yards.
Scott, a senior committed to Towson University, tallied 1,375 rushing yards for the season to mark his second consecutive year of achieving over 1,000 yards. While Scott was held to just 69 yards against Menchville, teammate Tyler Banks rushed for 221 yards on 13 carries.
