Devils increase streak to six games in win over King and Queen

It may not have been pretty, but as long as you’ve got a six-game winning streak going, it doesn’t much matter.

The Mathews High School varsity football team improved to 6-0 on Friday with a homecoming night win over the visiting King and Queen Tigers, 35-20.

"It is great winning the game for homecoming," said MHS head coach Paul White. "It has been several years since Mathews won its homecoming game."

At the start, it looked as if the Royal Tigers may surprise the unbeaten Devils, scoring on a 73-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. King and Queen also scored on its final possession with :15 on the clock.

In between those two scores, although Mathews struggled at times to find its rhythm, the Devils controlled much of the rest of the game. James Pavik, who was crowned homecoming king at halftime, did not disappoint his subjects, as the senior running back scored the Devils’ first four touchdowns on runs of 11, 13, 19 and 24 yard...
