Democratic primary Tuesday in Mathews

A Democratic primary election will be held Tuesday in Mathews County and the rest of Virginia’s 6th Senatorial District to select that party’s candidate for the Senate of Virginia.

Voters will be asked to choose between incumbent Sen. Lynwood Lewis Jr. of Accomac and Cape Charles resident Willie Randall. The winner of Tuesday’s primary will face off against the Republican candidate for that seat in the Nov. 5 general election.

Lewis was first elected in 2014 during a special election, filling Gov. Ralph Northam’s seat on the Senate when Northam resigned to take on the role of lieutenant governor.

A former member of the Northampton County Board of Supervisors, Randall served for more than 20 years in the Army before retiring in 1996 with the rank of Major.

Voters will need to report to their normal precinct and present an acceptable photo ID. Polls on Tuesday will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. and the last day to vote in-person absentee is Saturday. Pollin...
