Deadline approaches for local candidates

Residents interested in running for local offices have a little more than two months to complete and turn in the paperwork to declare their candidacy.

Mathews County Voter Registrar Carla Faulkner said the deadline to submit packets for all seats in the general election is 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11. Candidates are listed on the ballot on a first-come, first-served basis, she said, with the first person who turns in his or her completed packet for a certain office listed at the top of the ballot for that office.

The special election that will be held in November for the seat vacated by former supervisor Pepper Love has a different deadline, said Faulkner, with the paperwork not due until 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16. She said the deadline doesn’t give the registrar’s office much time to complete paperwork before voting by absentee ballot begins on Friday, Sept. 27.
