The Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club held a United States Croquet Association sanctioned tournament recently in Hartfield.
Fifteen players from up and down the East Coast came to vie for the championship trophies. The tournament started with a practice and clinic on Wednesday, Sept. 13, and was followed by singles and doubles play on Sept. 14 through the morning of Saturday, Sept. 16.
Saturday afternoon had playoff games and the finals were held on Sunday. Chesapeake Bay club president Macey White of Hartfield won the championship flight, followed by Rodney Lassiter of North Carolina. Jeff Morrison from the National Croquet Center in Florida won first flight, seconded by John Priest of Mathews.
Yen Sullivan, also from the National Croquet Center, took first in the second flight, edging out Karin Karel from the Delaware Croquet Club. In doubles play, White and Tom Cooper from New Jersey won the championship with Lassiter and Buck Brewer from Deltaville coming in second.
CBCC was formed in 2016 and built eight laser leveled courts in Hartfield. The club has a dining facility that will seat more than 120 people and a courtside clubhouse with locker rooms and lounge.
The Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club, in a release, encouraged everyone to come out and try out the game. “This is not the game we played in the backyard as a child and is full of skill and strategic challenges,” White said.
CBCC has organized practices for members and visitors on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons at 1 o’clock; there is no charge to come out to give this game a try. For more information, contact White at maceywhite@gmail.com.
