County tax filing deadlines approaching

Tax deadlines are approaching, and Mathews County Commissioner of the Revenue Les Hall wants residents to make sure they have their information filed and payments made on time.

Business taxes

Business owners are reminded that their gross receipts from last year are due in his office by March 1 in order to avoid a late filing payment, said Hall, while their tax payments are due in the treasurer’s office by April 1. The deadline for personal property returns for businesses is May 1, he said.

Tax relief

Residents who are filing for Tax Relief for the Elderly need to have their forms in by May 1, as well, said Hall. Tax relief of up to $1,000 is available for people over age 65 who own their own home, whose household income doesn’t exceed $35,000 annually, and whose personal net worth is not over $100,000 (excluding the value of the dwelling and up to five acres of the land it sits on).
