County looks to realign museum, tourism positions

With the retirement and subsequent death of Betty Jean Deal, longtime director of the Gloucester Museum of History as well as the retirement of former tourism coordinator Hilton Snowdon, county administration is working on realigning the two positions to help better serve the community. Currently, the positions will remain separate.

According to Gloucester’s director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Katey Legg, county staff has been soliciting community input on the future of the two positions, which both have played integral roles in attracting visitors to the county and excitement about its history.

“We found ourselves in an interesting position without a museum director and tourism coordinator,” Legg said.

According to Legg, the tourism coordinator position has been advertised several times with the hope of finding someone who will embrace the historical building aspect of the position. “We just couldn’t find the right person,” she said.
