Could Mathews be test site for broadband program?

Judy Rowe, chair of the Mathews County Broadband Advisory Board, told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that Rep. Rob Wittman is exploring the possibility of placing broadband equipment on aids to navigation in order to enhance delivery to underserved areas.

She asked the board to write a formal letter to Wittman requesting that he consider making Mathews County a pilot site for trial runs for the technology if the idea is determined to be feasible.

Placing the equipment on aids to navigation “could potentially serve areas of the county located on the water, where there is little or no service,” said Rowe. County Administrator Mindy Conner said she would draft a letter for the board to consider.

Rowe also asked the board to adopt a resolution allowing the county and the broadband advisory board to partner with the Center for Innovative Technology, a nonprofit organization that advises rural areas on broadband, in order to move forward on solving broadband issues. The b...
