Coast Guard rescues man near Gwynn’s Island

A Coast Guard boat crew rescued a man from the water approximately a half-mile north of Gwynn’s Island on Sunday afternoon.

A resident of the island contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders in Portsmouth at 2:45 p.m. and reported an overturned catamaran with one visible person in the water.

A 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Milford Haven launched to assist, but the person swam to shore before they arrived.

Upon learning that there was another unaccounted-for person in the vicinity, the rescue crew located and recovered the second individual from the water.

The crew transported both men to Station Milford Haven to be evaluated by a local EMS team. The individual recovered from the water was experiencing mild hypothermic symptoms.

The catamaran is aground on Gwynn’s Island and does not pose a hazard to navigation, according to a Coast Guard release.
