‘Buy Woodville’

Members of Bethel Baptist Church in Gloucester presented a $1,000 check on June 8 to the “Buy Woodville” fund for the ongoing preservation efforts at Woodville School. Speaking on behalf of the members of the church, Interim Pastor James Harris told members of the T. C. Walker and Woodville/Rosenwald School Foundation who were present to receive the donation that Bethel’s members wished to “honor the legacy of Thomas Calhoun Walker,” a lifelong member of the church. Walker’s dedicated efforts resulted in six Rosenwald schools being built in Gloucester County in the 1920s, thus improving educational opportunities for Gloucester County’s African-American children in the early 20th century. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Woodville School (www.woodvillerosenwaldschool.org) is the only remaining Rosenwald School in Gloucester.
