The April 20 American Red Cross blood drive at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building in Hudgins fell short of its 68-unit goal, with 61 units collected. Sixty-two potential donors came out; six were deferred, six gave double-red donations and one was unable to give a complete donation. Tamaira Hearn and Michelle Akers were first-time donors, with James Kennedy Doyle giving for the first time in Mathews. Gallon pins were awarded to Bill Burroughs (one gallon), David Bowman (two gallons), Larhonda Cosby and Marilyn Ottofaro (3), Larry Stewart (4), Patty Sarosy and Michael Koebach (6), Jack White, Melanie Procopio and Mitch Hallberg (7) and Carolyn Rowe (8). Helping donors were volunteers from Zion Baptist Church, including (photo above, standing from left), Pastor Johnny Wallace, Jennifer Clark, Marjorie Brooks, Faye Spriggs; seated, Charles Kelly and Doris Foster-Curseen.
