Mathews County will be a gathering place for birders in the weeks ahead.

The Northern Neck Audubon Society will take a bird walk at Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve at Onemo on Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. To sign up, call walk leader Frank Schaff at 804-462-0084. The society has also announced plans to walk Bethel Beach on its first event of 2014, on Monday, Jan. 13.

Also, the 114th annual Mathews Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, inside a large circle that includes a major portion of Mathews County, the Chesapeake Bay coastline and a sector in Ware Neck in Gloucester.

A count has been held annually in Mathews since 1969.
