BETTY J. LANDERKIN

Betty J. Landerkin passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, just shy of her 94th birthday. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she attended the Institute of Notre Dame (Nancy Pelosi’s alma mater). She married in 1950 and moved to St. James, Long Island, New York, where she worked for the Smithtown School District for many years until her retirement. In 1999, she moved to Gwynn’s Island where ironically her father came to fish when he lived in Newport News as a young man. She became active in Francis de Sales Catholic Church, volunteering at Mathews Memorial Library and becoming a Mathews Master Gardener. Betty loved to read, loved dogs and loved to travel, especially with her dear friend, Doris Lake. A few of her highlights were taking a windjammer cruise in the British Virgin Islands, a trans-Canada rail trip from Vancouver to Toronto in a glass-domed gold car, trips to Alaska, and snorkeling in Costa Rica.

Survivors include her three children, Eileen (Eddie), Linda (Joe) and Jim; her grandchildren, Brian (Katt), Jackie (Dave), Sara (Shane), Dylan, Michelle (Patrick), Lori (Derek), and Eddie (Margaret); great-grandchildren, Shea, Tyler, Liam, Emmett, Jake, Joey, Riley, MacKenzie and Cooper; her sister, Phyllis; niece, Tracey; great-nephew, Weston; cousin, Vera, and her beloved grand-dog, “Ellie.”

She was a wonderful mom, gram, GG, sister, aunt and friend. Special thanks to all the nurses and staff at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital and Sanders Rehab Center for their care and compassion. There will be no formal service held as per Betty’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
