Abingdon firefighters battle two structure fires

Members of Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to a pair of structure fires during the past few days.

The first occurred on Saturday evening on Line Fence Road. At 9:23 p.m., AVFR was sent to a possible structure fire. The structure was fully involved in the fire by the time they were on the scene.

According to AVFR, the scene had tough conditions for the responders who were met with rain, wind and a downed power line. To make matters more challenging, the crew had a limited water supply due to the lack of hydrants in that area. A pair of engines and a tanker had to shuttle water to the fire throughout the night from the nearest hydrant at Achilles Elementary School.

AVFR said that the responding units left the scene at 2:16 Sunday morning and spent several hours resetting equipment a placing fire apparatus back in service. The scene was then turned over to Virginia State Police.
