Building repairs can feel like a daunting project to tackle on your own. Hiring a contractor is sometimes not a route people choose and instead decide to take on the task themselves.
Finding a business that sells the materials required as well as being able to offer reliable knowledge on the project at hand can sometimes be crucial to a project.
W.T. Fary Bros., located on Farys Mill Road in Gloucester, is a family-owned business with a rich history in the area that has been operating in their current location since the early 1900s. Manager Joe Fary, and a third-generation Fary in the business, estimates that they currently have a “70 percent contractor base right now,” as more homeowners are taking on projects themselves.
“Most of the crews have been here a good while, they’re pretty knowledgeable on everything that goes into building,” he said. The Fary Bros. employees are able to offer their expertise and advice, with experience to back them up. “The average person working here at Fary Bros. has been here for 25 years,” Fary said, meaning they’re “experienced enough to know that you just don’t need one piece of lumber, you need a nail to put it together with, you need glue, and you need screws.” That is exactly what the staff is ready to do for their customers, going well beyond basic customer service.
According to Fary, the company not only strives for great customer relations, but also has “always prided [themselves] on selling a little bit better quality” materials. It strives to offer their customers excellent quality materials that other companies might not have.
The local building material business specializes in Andersen windows, a brand they’ve carried since the 1960s, and number one grade, pressure treated lumber, as well as plywood, doors, and baseboards. While they’re not a big box store, they strive to always “try to be able to provide what you need” for a construction, Fary said. They offer nails, bolts, screws and stainless-steel products, catering to builders. They even supply hardwoods for things like furniture making and cabinet building.
“People bring in their plans and I look over them,” he said, gesturing to a stack of building plans he had on his desk, “and make a lot of material lists for our customers.” The company also deals with warehousing for their customers and ensuring they have the right engineers for the job.
Customers in need of marine supplies can rely on Fary Brothers for materials for wooden boat fixes to finding the perfect piece of wood for oyster tong shafts.
W.T. Fary Bros. prides itself on good materials, fair prices, knowledge, and honest answers, according to Fary. That reflects in the repeat customers and families that have worked with them for generations.
As self repairs and do-it-yourself projects become more popular and obtainable, sourcing materials from businesses that want you to succeed and are ready to offer advice and knowledge along the way can be extremely helpful in ensuring the success of your project.
