James Clarence Schroer, 78, of Gloucester, Virginia, peacefully passed away on October 2, 2026 surrounded by his family. Throughout his life, Jimmy called many places home, including Newport News, Virginia, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories wherever he lived.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of Orlando Schroer Jr. and Ernestine Lyons Oliver. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend whose kindness and sense of humor touched countless lives.
Since 1968, Jimmy shared a loving marriage with his devoted wife, Linda Johnston Schroer. Together, they built a family that remained the center of his life and his greatest source of pride.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Jennifer Highsmith (Ray) and Stephanie Sweeny (John); his grandchildren, Brittney Southern (Kevin), Trevor Tippett (Lexi), and Jenna McKeown (Connor); his beloved great-grandchildren, Mason Lehman, Colton Lehman, Riley Tippett, and Walker Southern, as well as soon-to-arrive, Noah Tippett and Ellie McKeown.
Jimmy graduated from Ferguson High School in 1966 and St. Leo’s College with a degree in law enforcement. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before continuing a life of service through his career with the Newport News Police Department. During his distinguished law enforcement career, he was a member of the team that established the department’s original S.W.A.T. team and was presented with the Medal of Honor for his service and bravery. He later worked for Casey Auto Group, retiring as GM of the BMW location in 2015. He was respected for his strong work ethic and integrity. He truly loved his BMW team and customers.
Outside of work, Jimmy was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course. One of his proudest accomplishments was scoring a hole-in-one, a feat every golfer dreams of achieving. Nothing brought him greater joy than being with his family. Whether sharing stories, celebrating milestones, or simply enjoying time together, he treasured every moment spent with those he loved.
Jimmy will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his commitment to serving others, and the many memories he leaves behind. His legacy will live on through the generations of family and friends who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
The family will receive friends and visitors on October 17 from noon-4 p.m. at 6232 Allmondsville Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061. A private service will be held at a later date.
