Barbara Lee Drinkard Egan of Cobbs Creek, Va., passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, surrounded by her husband, sons, Candy Oliver, Bridgette Egan Weiss and Jason Melville.
She was born on December 16, 1942 in Lynchburg, Va., to Doris Addie Rowles Drinkard and Walter Patterson Drinkard Sr.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter P. Drinkard Jr.; sister-in-law, Doris C. Poore Drinkard; sister, Joyce Ann Drinkard Hudson, and brother-in-law, C.W. Hudson.
Barbara is survived by her husband, J. Eddie Egan; her sons, James E. Egan Jr. (Jason Melville) and Claude Andrew Egan; as well as many nieces and nephews that were very special to her.
She received her degree in nursing from John Tyler Community College, now known as Brightpoint, in June 1972 while mothering two infant sons. Barbara worked in many places during her nursing career of 44 years; Henrico Doctors Hospital, safety nurse for Stone & Webster, North Anna Power Station, during construction, school nurse at Louisa and Spotsylvania school systems, and also public health nurse for Hanover, New Kent, and Charles City counties. She enjoyed her work until the age of 74.
Barbara was a person of many talents; stained-glass creations, sewing anything, and making Christmas Santa dolls. She loved playing Texas Hold ’Em and her Martin guitar. She was a very special lady who was loved and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
The family will celebrate her life at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28, at Bliley’s, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, Va. 23228. Visitation will be held from 8:30-9:30. Interment to follow at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery where she will be honored for her dedication to her career in nursing by The Central Virginia Nurses Honor Guard with the Nightingale Tribute. All attendees are invited to a reception immediately after the cemetery service. At Barbara’s and the family’s request, please refrain from wearing dark, somber clothing–she would have wanted a bright and cheerful remembrance.
