Archaeological digs Saturday, July 3 at Fairfield

The public is invited to take part in an archeological dig at VA250 Dig: Homecoming at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairfield Archaeology Park in Gloucester, located at 5777 Fairfield Lane, and again next Friday, July 3, at VA250 Dig Days. A release from the Fairfield Foundation said the event is a special public archaeology day focused on descendant connections, African American history and community storytelling. A goal is to connect archaeology with family histories of local communicates shaped by enslavement, emancipation and the generations that followed, the release said. Visitors can tour ongoing excavations around the quarters for enslaved people at Fairfield plantation, meeting archaeologists, and learn how artifacts and landscapes “helped tell the stories of the people who lived, labored, and built communities in the region,” the release said.
