91 expected to graduate from MHS Saturday

Ninety-one students are expected to cross the Mathews High School auditorium stage on Saturday afternoon during the school’s 75th annual commencement exercises.

Leading this year’s class will be co-valedictorians Emily Lindale Brown and Elizabeth Miller Ransone.

Brown, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Brown of Mathews, will attend the University of California at Berkeley in the fall.

Ransone, the daughter of Drs. Sterling and Karen Ransone of Cobbs Creek, will attend the College of William and Mary. Both Brown and Ransone ended their academic careers at MHS with grade point averages in excess of 4.5.

Saturday’s 2 p.m. program begins with performances of “Pomp and Circumstance” and the National Anthem by the MHS Symphonic Band, under the direction of Doug Sutton. Class president Paul Burnette will welcome the crowd to the Harry M. Ward Auditorium and present the class gift.
