Woodville to sponsor Oral History Workshop Sept. 24

NATIONAL ARCHIVES
When Woodville volunteers shared this 1947 photograph of first and second graders at Bena-Hayes School with Mary Anne Fletcher (née Jackson), she was surprised to find herself in the group (she can be seen wearing a white bow in her hair, sitting at her desk behind a boy who is facing the blackboard). The photo brought back memories that Fletcher shared as part of the Woodville Foundation’s Oral History Project—collecting stories from the community to preserve the history of African American education in Gloucester. Mrs. Fletcher (photo below), who currently lives in Newport News, plans to attend the Oral History Workshop on Sept. 24.
