Dr. Walter Reed’s 175th birthday party Saturday

A public celebration will be held on Saturday at Dr. Walter Reed’s Birthplace in Gloucester, where the famed physician was born 175 years ago, on Sept. 13, 1851. The party will be held from 1-4 p.m. at Reed’s birthplace, 4021 Hickory Fork Road. It is hosted by The Fairfield Foundation, which maintains the historic structure. Cake cutting is at 1:30 p.m. A Fairfield release noted that efforts to preserve the birthplace of the man who conquered yellow fever began 100 years ago. The Medical Society of Virginia began the project in 1926. This year’s event sponsor, Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, has been open for 49 years. Family activities will include an archaeological dig, searching for evidence of the early Belroi community. The release said archaeologists will talk about bugs … from years ago, and what their depiction on artifacts symbolized, to bugs crawling on the site today.
