Artist Bill Castro will give a presentation on wood carving at 4 p.m. Friday at Arts on Main in Gloucester. It is free and open to the public.Castro will bring a raw piece of wood and have the audience share their ideas of what the carving will turn out to be, said a press release. He will discuss how he finds the wood he uses, what he is looking for, and conceptualizing the piece. Finally, he will explain the process of carving and the tools and finishes he uses.
A former college football coach and athletic director, Castro creates nationally competitive wood sculptures using driftwood from local waters. He selects weathered and interesting woods, often hundreds of years old, to carve interpretive or stylized pieces of art.
