Wetlands board approves shoreline improvement projects

The Gloucester County Wetlands Board unanimously approved a number of requests from residents during its Oct. 12 meeting in the courthouse office building.

Lee and Courtney Barber of Ditchley Place requested permission to construct to riprap sills of 184 and 172 feet with 120 cubic yards of beach nourishment and 2,600 square feet of wetland vegetation.

The Ark Holding, LLC, sought authorization to add Class 1 stone to 60 linear feet of existing riprap sill to increase the height to a consistent foot above the high water mean. Sand fill will raise the wetland area landward of the sill to support wetland plants. There will be 25 cubic yards of sand fill placed landward of the sill in a 660-square-foot area to also raise the elevation of the vegetation.

The entire filled area will remain in jurisdictional elevation for tidal wetlands and will be vegetated. The area landward of the sill will be excavated to install filter fabric. The board voted 6-0 to approve the request with board member Chip Neikirk recusing himself from the vote as he presented the request. This project will be located along Wilson Farm Lane.

Daniel Troutman had two requests submitted during the meeting, the first was for authorization to construct a 200-foot oyster bag sill on Baileys Wharf Road. The second request, also on Baileys Wharf Road, was to remove riprap and install marsh toe and stone sill as erosion protection. Sand backfill and marsh planting will also be installed.

Following the meeting of the Wetlands Board, its members reconvened as the Chesapeake Bay Preservation and Erosion Commission to review an application from Richard and Regina Scott of Berkeley Drive. The request was to encroach into the RPA buffer to construct a flagstone walkway to a pier and patio. The application was approved unanimously.
