VMRC to consider request from Rappahannock Oyster Company

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission will consider an application about expansion of a Middlesex County oyster aquaculture facility Tuesday.

During a meeting at commission headquarters in Newport News, public information officer Laurie Naismith said VMRC will review the request of the Rappahannock Oyster Company to cover two existing open-pile structures with an open-sided roof and to construct open-pile decking over a 30-foot wide by 80-foot long existing boat slip area.

Also, the applicant seeks to install six mooring piles to secure a 60-foot long by 30-foot wide floating, paddlewheel upweller barge at the company’s facility on Locklies Creek in Topping.

The project is protested by two nearby property owners, Naismith said.

In other matters, the commission will hold a public hearing to establish the annual Chesapeake Bay and coastal recreational management measures for striped bass, also called rockfish, she said.
