VMRC, MVRS and Coast Guard respond to boat accident

A woman was injured in a boating accident that occurred in Queens Creek around 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.

Laurie Naismith, spokesman for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, said the accident occurred when the driver of the boat, William Kemp of Virginia Beach, hit an uncharted sandbar in an area where the channel is filling in. The woman, Cynthia Kemp, also of Virginia Beach, was thrown forward and injured her neck. Both William Kemp and Bambi Thompson of Mathews, who was also a passenger, sustained minor injuries, said Naismith.

The Coast Guard attempted a rescue, said Naismith, but the 40-foot boat being used couldn’t enter the shallow water, so VMRC was called in. Although the VMRC crew was in a boat that could go in shallower water, rescuers still had to disembark and walk to the scene hauling advanced life support equipment.
