Varsity Devils go 1-2 in recent action

Heading into winter break, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team went 1-2 in recent action, picking up a win on Friday against West Point, while falling to Northumberland and Rappahannock.

Meanwhile, the JV Devils went 2-1 this past week, with its first season wins coming against West Point and Rappahannock.

Northumberland

The varsity Blue Devils fell to the visiting Northumberland Indians last Thursday in an overtime thriller, 85-76. The Devils started off slow as Northumberland began the game on an 8-2 run. Throughout the first half, Mathews gained momentum after key defensive stops and fast break scores.

The first half ended with Mathews leading Northumberland, 41-29. The energy from the first half carried over for the Blue Devils as they widened their lead in the third quarter. With under three minutes remaining, center Jordyn Cosby fouled out. With the Devils missing a key player, North-umberland began a comeback, cutting the lead to 10.
