Tornado warnings, but no tornados here Monday

 

Many residents of Gloucester, Mathews and surrounding communities operated on diminished sleep Monday after multiple tornado warnings were issued beginning around 3 a.m.

The severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain, powerful winds, thunder and lightning, as well as power outages, but thankfully no major damage to either county.

“Gloucester County experienced high winds and rain as the front pushed through early Monday morning,” said Brett Major, Gloucester’s emergency services coordinator. Though the tornado warnings were in effect, Major said Gloucester experienced sporadic areas of wind damage, but no real swaths or paths that would indicate that a tornado touched down.

Major said winds in most areas of the county reached between 50 and 60 miles per hour, and may have reached up to 70 mph in a few locations.
