Supervisors transfer $250,000 to schools

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of $250,000 from the county’s general fund to the school system during Tuesday night’s meeting in the colonial courthouse.

The move, which uses money previously allocated to capital improvements, will help fill a $750,000 deficit the schools are facing because of rising health insurance costs. Supervisors adopted the measure by a 6-0 vote, with Phillip Bazzani absent.

Gloucester school superintendent Walter Clemons confirmed earlier this month a $750,000 gap in funding for the school’s health insurance program for FY 2017. During the supervisors’ May 3 meeting, the board considered a resolution authorizing a public hearing to discuss an increase in the real estate tax rate to help offset the cost, but opted instead to work with the school board to come up with cost-saving measures both on the part of the school division and the county to close the gap.
