Supervisors express frustration with VDOT priorities

Upcoming transportation improvement projects were the topics of conversation during the April 16 meeting of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors.

Senior planner Carol Rizzio was a sounding board as a number of supervisors expressed frustrations over why certain VDOT projects, namely pedestrian improvement projects, seemed to take precedence over roadway improvements.

One of the first areas supervisors called into question was the current Smart Scale project of intersection improvements at Route 14 and Main Street. This project will add an additional turn lane for motorists traveling toward Mathews from Business Route 17 beginning at Ware House Road. 

Ware district supervisor Andy James, who lives off Ware House Road said, “It’s a horrendous road to get out of now … I’d love to see (VDOT Residency Administrator Joyce) McGowan and a couple of her Fredericksburg people come to my house and I ride them out to Walmart around 5 o’clock one evening...
