Subcommittee to study proposed livestock amendments

The Mathews County Planning Commission is taking a study-it-further approach to proposed amendments to the county’s regulations governing horses and livestock.

During a meeting on Tuesday, June 17, the commission discussed the matter, which had been the subject of a joint public hearing with the board of supervisors in April. During that hearing, 14 people spoke against the proposed amendment, while none spoke for it.

The changes as proposed would require that at least one acre of grazing land be provided for each horse or cow kept for private use in the Rural and the Residential 1 and 2 zoning districts. Minimum lot sizes would be enacted for other livestock, as well.

The amendments would also establish setback requirements for barns and stables, but wouldn’t require the construction of shelter for animals. Finally, there would be lot size and setback requirements for livestock kept for commercial purposes, as well.
