Strong winds damage campers, homes in northern Gloucester

A severe thunderstorm last week caused significant damage to a number of camping trailers at Thousand Trails Campground and to property elsewhere in that area of northern Gloucester County.

No injuries from the storm—which hit in the early evening hours of Wednesday, July 27—were reported, though one Thousand Trails camper was taken for medical care after experiencing chest pains during the incident, according to Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Chief J.D. Clements.

The storm, which was verified by meteorologist Bill Sammler with the National Weather Service in Wakefield as a microburst, uprooted a number of trees and snapped a number of others at the campground and in the nearby Holly Beach subdivision. The NWS reported that there was no evidence of a tornado from the radar data or from looking at photos of damage from the incident.
