State goes Democratic, G-M vote (mostly) for GOP

Virginians elected the Democratic candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general, with Democrats also reaching at least a 62-seat majority in the House of Delegates, which marks the largest Democratic House majority in the state since the election of 1989.
Abigail Spanberger easily defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears for the state’s top job, garnering more than 57 percent of the vote in the race for governor. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi also outpaced her Republican opponent for lieutenant governor, John Reid, winning 55.32 percent of the vote.
Democrat Jay Jones completed the sweep of the top three state offices, beating incumbent attorney general Jason Miyares with 52.82 percent of the vote.
Gloucester and Mathews counties voted overwhelmingly for the three Republican candidates in those races, with all three garnering between 65.82 and 72.04 percent of the ballots cast, depending on the race.
