Softball tourney to be held as fundraiser for Deltaville Ballpark

A fundraiser softball tournament will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Deltaville Ballpark to help raise money for the installation of new stadium lights.

The eight-team, double elimination tournament will be free to attend, with a donation box set up to support the cause, said one of the organizers, Brenden Rivenbark. In addition, there will be concessions and a 50-50 raffle both days.

The park has the oldest all-wooden baseball stadium in Virginia and one of the oldest remaining in the country, said a press release. The approximate cost of new lights is $140,000, said Rivenbark, but community leaders were able to secure around $100,000 in grant funds to pay for them.

Rivenbark said that organizers feel they can raise at least $20,000 with team entry fees and sponsor pledges, and they hope to raise the balance through community attendance and support. He expressed appreciation to the teams that have...
