Soaring free

An adult male Bald Eagle was released back into the wild on Friday at Beaverdam Park in Gloucester. The bird, a patient of the Wildlife Center of Virginia for the past couple months, had been found in Gloucester suffering from lead poisoning. Following a successful treatment, the bird was released by the Center’s president and founder Edward Clark Jr., above. After dipping to fewer than 50 nests in Virginia in 1977, the eagle population is on the rebound. There are now more than 1,000 active Bald Eagle nests in the commonwealth. Photos by Charlie Koenig
