Mathews High School senior Joice Small and junior Reese Brock were both named this week to the first-team All-Region girls’ basketball team for VHSL Region 1A. The two had previously received first-team honors in the Tidewater District. Region 1A also includes the Eastern Shore and Northern Neck districts.

The Mathews High School girls’ team fell in the first round of the Region 1A tournament on Feb. 22 to King and Queen. West Point went on to be crowned regional champion on Saturday and will host Region 1B runner-up Buffalo Gap on Friday.

The MHS boys also lost in the opening round of the regional tournament, which was won by Lancaster. The Lancaster Red Devils also host Buffalo Gap on Friday in the VHSL state tourney.
