Service Sunday to honor two Revolutionary War patriots

A grave marking ceremony to honor two patriots who contributed to the cause in the American Revolution will be held Sunday afternoon in Mathews.

The Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Nelson Jr. chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution will conduct the ceremony beginning at 3 p.m. at the Williams Family Cemetery.

The graves to be marked are that of Samuel Williams (1725-1789) and John Richards (?-1806).

The Cobbs Hall and the Cricket Hill chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be in attendance as well as representatives of the Mathews County Historical Society and other SAR chapters.

A release said both men “gave substantial aid” to the Revolutionary cause. The grave markings are part of an ongoing project “to remember the founders of our Nation to include all Patriots who fought in the Revolution or provided support for the cause,” the release said.
