School briefs

Heath D. Allen graduated from Woodberry Forest School during its 123rd commencement exercises on May 26. Allen received the Allen A. Goodwyn Award for Choral Music and will attend the University of Mary Washington. He is the son of Dr. W. Heath Allen of Gloucester and Alisa C. Bohon of Hayes.

Kathryn Elizabeth Rebertus received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro during commencement ceremonies May 4. A 2004 graduate of Rising Sun High School in Rising Sun, Md., she is the daughter of Russell and Diane Rebertus of Gloucester.

Lukas W. Rebertus received a bachelor of science degree in history from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during commencement ceremonies May 29. Rebertus was a four-year varsity wrestler for the Naval Academy and is 10th in the Midshipmen record book for career wins. He will attend The Basic School in Quantico in September. A 2007 graduate of Caravel Academy in Newark, Del., Rebertus is the son of Russell and Diane Rebertus of Gloucester.

Hadleigh Elizabeth Stone of Gloucester Point received a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, during commencement ceremonies May 12.

Brandon Williams of Gloucester graduated cum laude and received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical science from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, during commencement ceremonies May 5.

Lauren Lynn Hurst received a bachelor of science degree in biology from James Madison University during commencement ceremonies May 5. Hurst’s studies had a pre-medical emphasis. She has been awarded a two-year scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in microbiology at the College of William and Mary. Hurst is the daughter of Andy and Heidi Hurst of Mathews.

Darius J. Dixon of Mathews received a bachelor of science degree in finance and banking from Virginia Union University during commencement ceremonies May 12. Dixon is now employed with PepsiCo Beverages and will pursue a master’s degree in global marketing at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the son of Barbara Dixon of Mathews and Vincent Jackson of Hayes, and the grandson of Willie and Esther Dixon of Mathews.

Six local students were named to the spring semester dean’s list at the College of William and Mary. They were Jessica Edington and Ashleigh Ramos of Gloucester, Michael Sanderson of Hudgins, Crystal Welch of Mathews, Andrew Bryan of North and Shannon Butler of Susan. The recognition requires a 3.6 or higher grade point average.

Christopher R. Aiken received a bachelor of arts degree in economics/business from Virginia Military Institute during commencement ceremonies May 16. Aiken also received a U.S. Navy commission. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher T. Aiken of Gloucester.

L. Scott Stewart Jr. was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Jefferson College of Health and Sciences, where he is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in emergency services. The recognition requires a 3.4 or higher grade point average. Stewart is the son of Larry and Alice Stewart of Mathews.

Several local students recently received degrees from the College of William and Mary. Students from Gloucester received degrees as follows: Erin Deal, juris doctor; Mary Runnells, doctor of philosophy; Emily Dwoyer, master’s in education; Alexa McFerrin, bachelor of arts; and Jenna Whitney, bachelor of science. Also, William Burns of Mathews received a doctor in education degree, Samantha Rozakis of Port Haywood received a master’s in education and Holly Stainback of Saluda received a master of arts in education degree.

Whitney Daniels received a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Liberty University during commencement ceremonies May 12. Daniels was also a member of Sigma Beta Delta National Business Honor Society at Liberty. She is the daughter of Tommy and Debbie Daniels of Mathews.

Allyson Hudson Sterling received a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine during commencement ceremonies June 2. A 2000 graduate of Gloucester High School, Dr. Sterling also holds an undergraduate degree in anthropology from Wake Forest University. She will begin her residency in general surgery with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in Spartanburg, S.C. in July. Sterling is the daughter of Fran and David Hudson of Gloucester.

Three Gloucester students were named to the spring semester dean’s list at the University of Mary Washington. They were seniors Rachel A. Byrd and Virginia M. Page and junior Brittany Byrd. The recognition requires a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Four local students were named to the spring semester dean’s list at Radford University. They were senior social work major Jess Lauriault Lackes and junior marketing major Michael Allen Sage, both of Gloucester, and senior interdisciplinary studies major Morgan Ann Woodlief and sophomore communication and recreation, parks and tourism major Brittany Renee Masiclat, both of Hayes. The recognition requires a 3.4 or higher grade point average.
