School Board seeks more information from Justice Department

The Gloucester School Board has requested more information before it responds to the U.S. Department of Justice’s recent assertion that a policy the board adopted in December discriminates against students based on gender identity. 

Last fall, Gloucester High School sophomore Gavin Grimm, who was born a female but identifies as a male, requested to use the boys’ restrooms at GHS. Grimm previously attended Gloucester Public Schools as a female with a different first name. The GHS administration knew about Grimm’s transgender status and had him use a unisex restroom in the nurse’s office as an alternative. 

After Grimm complained about that arrangement, the administration granted his request to use the boys’ restrooms. The school board took up the issue after parents learned Grimm was allowed in the male facilities and complained.
