The Mathews Rotary Club is teaming up with Thomas Hunter Middle School students to raise money to drill a well in South Sudan and call attention to the need for clean water in many parts of the world. They will be participating in Water for South Sudan’s Iron Giraffe Challenge.

A fundraising community walk will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, on the Thomas Hunter Middle School Nature Trail.

THMS seventh grade science teacher Jerry Ligon said his sustainable resources class has been learning all about the need for clean water while identifying native species and discussing the resources such species need to thrive.

Fresh water is diminishing from the world, said Ligon. Only 3 percent of all the water in the world is fresh, and 2 percent of that is tied up in the Arctic and Antarctic glaciers.
