Repair work at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge will require a complete closure of the span to all motor vehicle and marine traffic for six hours early Sunday morning.
That project and other highway improvements throughout the county are causing a number of traffic delays.
“The closure is necessary to allow crews to perform grating repairs,” said Jennifer Gwaltney, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation. Both VDOT crews and a contractor will handle the job, she said.
The span will be closed in both the northbound (Gloucester Point) and southbound (Yorktown) directions of the bridge from 12 a.m.-6 a.m. Sunday, a time when vehicular traffic is traditionally much lower, Gwaltney said. Motorists needing to detour will likely head from Gloucester to West Point and over to I-64 that leads to the Peninsula, she said, and detour signs will be posted to assist travelers.
