Early in-person voting ends Saturday for the statewide special election on the proposed constitutional amendment to redraw Virginia’s congressional district boundaries.
Registrar offices in Gloucester, Mathews and the rest of the commonwealth will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday for this final day of early voting.
Polling places in both counties will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for this special election. Voters are being asked to respond yes or no to the following question:
“Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”
Early voting on this referendum began on March 6. According to the Virginia Public Access Project, as of last Thursday a total of 30 percent of eligible voters in Mathews County (2,261) and 14.9 percent of Gloucester voters (4,681) had already cast their ballots. Statewide, 776,657 early ballots had been cast as of last Thursday.
As of last Thursday, Mathews was the top county among percentage of registered voters already casting their ballots, with James City County in second place at 25.6 percent, or 16,978 votes.
