Reading Night

Lee-Jackson Elementary School held its first Reading Night on Tuesday, with parents and children working with teachers on strategies for encouraging reading. The program was a huge success; principal Drew Greve said that 210 people had registered and more than that showed up. Groups spent time in the classrooms, as teachers focused on fun ways to get students excited about reading and techniques parents can use at home to help. Above, first grade teacher Amy Shaw leads a group of parents and children in a game of Sight Word Bingo. Sight words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight. Greve praised assistant principal Cindy Gray for organizing the successful event, and cafeteria manager Nelda Gibbs for preparing a free lasagna dinner for all who attended.
