RCC president asks Mathews board’s help in building Glenns access road

Rappahannock Community College president Elizabeth “Sissy” Crowther addressed the Mathews County Board of Supervisors during its Feb. 24 meeting and requested an increase in the amount the county contributes to operating funds for the college so that the college can beef up its capital funds and finally build an access road planned 45 years ago at the RCC Glenns campus. The board took no action on the matter.

The road, which will cost $1.5 million, will enable a future addition that would house science labs, said Crowther. The cost to the county would be $13,300 per year for 10 years, double the $6,650 the county currently pays for operating expenses.

Crowther said that 35 percent of all Mathews students currently enrolled in higher education anywhere are attending RCC. The college serves 229 students who are enrolled in credit programs, 60 students in per diem programs such as the governor’s school, and 80 workforce trainees, all from Mathews, she said.
