Rappahannock Community College recently announced new members of its faculty and staff.
Steve Roane is the new Coordinator of Learning Resources, formerly known as Libraries. He replaces Dan Ream who retired at the end of 2020.
Roane’s most recent position was Head of Technical Services for the Daniel Library at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He brings experience in all facets of library science, including the expanded use of technology in library settings. Roane envisions the Learning Resource Centers becoming an integral hub for RCC’s students, faculty, staff and community.
Prior to The Citadel, Roane worked several years in the Virginia Community College System at Northern Virginia Community College and Tidewater Community College.
“Working with community college students is one of my favorite things,” said Roane. “I’m excited to return home to Virginia and the community college system.”
Roane has a master’s degree from George Mason University and resides in Mechanicsville.
Casey Yocum just began working as the Coordinator of College Navigators. She oversees the credit advising operations serving students. Besides supervising college advisors, known as navigators, Yocum will work closely with the Coordinator of Dual Enrollment, Hutt Williams, and his team of high school navigators to ensure a seamless transition from high school to RCC.
Yocum comes from Virginia Commonwealth University where she was a Hall Director, supervising 30 residential assistants in two residence halls. She also coordinated first-year experiences for more than 1,000 students. Previously, she was a Student Life Coordinator at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton.
Yocum earned an Associate of Arts degree from Suffolk County Community College in New York and then became the first in her family to earn a four-year degree. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Studies with a minor in Family Studies from Towson State University.
She went on to earn a master’s in education while serving as an Assistant Community Director and a Grade Recovery Academic Sustainability Program Mentor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
“Student success is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Yocum. “I’ve experienced, both as a student and a professional, how different support systems can affect a student’s chance at success. I’ve developed a holistic advising philosophy to inspire and meet students where they are.” Yocum resides in Richmond.
Ashlee Greene-Nichols recently accepted a permanent, full-time nursing faculty position at RCC. She began her higher education journey at RCC by earning an Associate of Arts degree. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Liberty University and is pursuing a master’s degree in Nursing Education also at Liberty University.
“I’m passionate about education and helping others realize their potential,” said Greene-Nichols. “As Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’” Greene-Nichols lives in Gloucester.
“We are pleased to welcome Ashlee, Steve and Casey to the RCC family,” said RCC President Shannon Kennedy. “All three have community college experience as either a student and/or employee, and we are excited about the commitment they have to our mission and our students.”
