Gloucester County is home to many different pollinators responsible for the continuing and survival of flowering plants. These hardworking pollinators play a critical role in the supply of food for humans, so ensuring their survival is important.
Sherry Kosakowski is the Clean Community Coordinator for Gloucester County and the liaison for the Bee City Committee of Gloucester County, a committee that educates on native bees and pollinators. She offered an insight into the different pollinators that provide for the county and how the community can help support the local pollinators.
When it comes to native bees, “there’s about 20 thousand species of bees worldwide, almost four thousand in the United States, and about four hundred in Virginia,” said Kosakowski. “A lot of these species are solitary, so they’re not like honey bees. They’re not social, they’re just working on their own nest.”
